Celebrate the Quieter Moments
by Patricia Heatherington
I tend to think of celebrations first for large milestones or achievements: birthdays, anniversaries, graduations. But there are smaller ones that don’t get much press. Maybe it’s nailing an important presentation, finishing a first draft of something, or making a small piece of art just for yourself. How often do we put that smaller thing aside and immediately start thinking of the next project? Or maybe how we could have made that project “better?”
I’m raising my hand here. I do it. But I am trying to relish those “quiet” accomplishments, or those completed things done just for me. Maybe it’s sharing the finished thing with a friend or treating myself to something I’ve wanted. Or maybe sometimes it’s just sitting in the moment and relishing the thought that I did it.
It also doesn’t have to be a thing completed. Awhile back, I met a friend for dinner. When the server asked if we were celebrating anything, I was ready with my then near automatic reply of “nothing, really.” It wasn’t one of our birthdays. Neither of us had a new job or a recent anniversary of any sort. But I remember pausing and thinking…you know what? We were celebrating something. We were celebrating years of friendship, taking time for ourselves, meeting up amidst busy schedules, and enjoying a nice dinner. So instead, I smiled and said, “yes, getting together and catching up.” I don’t know what it was, but it added a little extra brightness to the evening when framed in that light.
This summer, amidst so many big celebrations like graduations, holidays, vacations…before rushing on to the next thing, let’s take a moment to savor something that may seem small or ordinary. Maybe it’s celebrating cleaning out a storage closet before moving right on to the garage or celebrating a dinner out with family or friends for no reason other than just time together.
From me to you, congratulations on whatever it is you’re celebrating.
Patricia

Strength + Balance: Breathe in Flow
with Iris, Amy, Kathleen & Kim
Saturday, June 27
Breath is more than background noise in yoga. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have for creating strength, steadiness, and flow.
In this edition of Strength + Balance, we’ll break down the foundations of breath within movement and explore when and why inhales and exhales support specific actions in a flowing practice. Many students learn to follow teacher cues without fully understanding how the breath naturally works with the body. This workshop is designed to change that.
Join Iris, Amy, Kathleen, and Kim for this thoughtful, playful, and uplifting workshop experience.
Date: Saturday, June 27 (please note, no Strength + Balance in July or August)
Time: 1:00-2:30pm
Investment: Members $20, Non-members $30
No refunds. Register in advance to reserve your spot.
